Jellicoe Road – Melina Marchetta

I know I have a lot of Marchetta on here, but I do have a good reason for it. I love her work. It’s as simple as that. She is an amazing author; the fact that she is Australian makes it better because there is some chance of meeting here at a signing or something. But then again, maybe not. That aside though, Melina Marchetta is one of my favourite authors and her books are among my favourites as well. I don’t know what it is about her writing, but it draws me in and I finish the books very quickly.

If you have never had the experience of reading one of her books, I recommend you straightaway go and buy one. And I mean like now, seriously, because her books are astounding.

And without further ado, here is my review. Hey, that rhymes!

At age eleven, Taylor Markham was abandoned by her mother. At fourteen, she ran away from boarding school, only to be tracked down and brought back by a mysterious stranger. Now seventeen, Taylor’s the reluctant leader of her school’s underground community, whose annual territory war with the Townies and visiting Cadets has just begun. This year, though, the Cadets are led by Jonah Griggs, and Taylor can’t avoid his intense gaze for long. To make matters worse, Hannah, the one adult Taylor trusts, has disappeared. But if Taylor can piece together the clues Hannah left behind, the truth she uncovers might not just settle her past, but also change her future.

Taylor is honestly one of my favourite characters. I love her story and she may not be the nicest person, but she is honest and tries hard. I also love that all the characters are connected in some way. There is some background about them and how they met before, or how they know each other. Or even what they know about each other.

It is a great book and has a little bit of mystery involved in it. Give it a go and see if you can figure out the mystery. I can ensure you that you will love it. The start may seem a tad slow, but a few pages in and you’re hooked.
